- On the first Tuesday of each month
the Friends of Werakata National Park meet at the Abermain School of
Arts at 7pm.
Each meeting aims to include an educational session (eg a talk on the
flora or fauna of the Park) and the business of the group. Tea and
coffee will be provided. Feel free to come. Entry is via the back
carpark. Meetings last untill about 9.30pm.
On the second Sunday of each month (or Saturday night if a Spotlight Activity) - National Park Guides & Werakata Friends will lead Discovery walks in and around Werakata. The aim is to observe & record the flora & fauna of the Park. We'll also discuss early European settlement, local history etc, where relative to the walk.

Meet 9:20am Sunday 13th April at Kitchener Poppet Head Park (5kms south of Cessnock via Vincent Street) - then short drive to start of walk.
Cost: $3 each or $6 for family of 2A/2C.
Duration: about 3 hours. Walk will finish by 12:30pm
Bring: Closed walking shoes, suitable clothing for possible scrub, weather/sun protection, drinking water, snacks, binoculars etc.

Join us for a 3 hour loop walk in Werakata N P. The Park conserves a rich diversity of plants and animals including a number of threatened species and endangered ecological communities. We will mainly follow park firetrails but also get off the track to follow a creekbed. There are some hilly sections but not too difficult for participants with a reasonable fitness level.

A Walk up Mt Tomalpin, Werakata NP

Grade: Difficult. Good level of fitness required
Meet 9:50 am at intersection of Lake Rd and Hebburn Road (also known as Valley Feeds Road) Elrington. 7 km west from Leggetts Drive. Then short drive to start of walk.
Cost:$3 each or $6 for family of 2A/2C. Suitable for ages 10+

Description: Join the Discovery guides and Friends of Werakata for a 4 hour walk up Mt Tomalpin (known locally as Tumblebee). Follow old mining tracks and learn a little of the steam and rail history as we go. We’ll enjoy a lunch break at the top with sweeping views over spotted gum forests and the Lower Hunter Valley. Observe the interesting plants on Tumblebee with sights and signs of local fauna. A good level of fitness is needed as the track up is steep and slippery in parts. More details can b found here.
